Ag Day is the annual alumni street fair on the Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) campus in Knoxville. This year’s event is Nov. 3 before kickoff of the Vols’ football game vs. Troy.
Visit a Plantation
The annual Heritage Festival is Oct. 13 at Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tenn. The 18,400-acre plantation is privately owned by a foundation but is one of UTIA’s 10 research and education centers in Tennessee.
Plant and Pest App
Professional landscapers and nursery growers can’t carry around heavy pest control and management manuals while working, but they can get the information they need on their phones. Experts from UTIA and six other universities developed the IPMPro mobile app, which sends alerts on timely pest and plant issues tailored to app users’ locations. Amy Fulcher, assistant professor in the Department of Plant Sciences, was the lead developer. And now, there’s IPMLite for the home gardener.
Farmers Market
Get your fresh produce at UT. The UT Farmers Market, held at the UT Gardens in Knoxville, is open every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. through October. Students sell produce harvested from the Organic Crops Unit. Other vendors sell flowers, plants, goat cheese, eggs, baked goods and crafts.
