Turner Center Creates Small Business Development Initiative

The Turner Center, along with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, has created a small-business development initiative for startup businesses called the UT Southern Up-Start program.

Rural communities need small businesses and small-business owners in order to survive and create a strong rural ecosystem. Building this thriving rural ecosystem means supporting new entrepreneurs to ensure their opportunities for success.

The UT Southern Up-Start program forms a cohort of small-business start-ups and meets with them once a month from February to August. During these meetings, the participants are educated on basic business principles such as marketing, forecasting, target marketing, etc. The participants then work on applying the concepts to their own business plans.

Shonda Reynolds won the pitch competition to produce conflict-resolution workshops to help individuals learn to resolve inner conflict to enable them to be successful. John Lancaster won the Director’s Choice Award with his business plan pitch to open the historic Horne-Daly House as a bed and breakfast with a small event space.

Turner Center Secures Funding

The Turner Center received $15,000 in funding from LaunchTN’s Community Partnership Program Cohort 2.

LaunchTN, committed to nurturing and advancing Tennessee’s startup ecosystem, has designated $196,400 for 21 Tennessee organizations, including the Turner Center.

The Turner Center drives entrepreneurship in the south-central Tennessee region. The Turner Center will provide a new guidebook for the UT Southern Business Mentoring Network Program and hosted a Regional Summit Train-the-Trainer opportunity for economic development leaders across Southern Middle Tennessee.
