UTC’s College of Business MBA program celebrated its 50th anniversary last fall with a golf tournament, mini-courses, tours of the new Bloomberg lab, networking with successful alumni, a reunion and tailgate. UTC’s MBA program has been annually ranked among the top 300 “best part-time MBA” opportunities by the Princeton Review and one of the top business schools in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek. Campus Changes
Construction on the second phase of the Pedestrian Mall in the heart of campus is in full swing. Once complete, there will be sloped sidewalks and steps with handrails on Cardiac Hill from Heritage Plaza to Oak Street; an accessible walkway to extend from Vine Street to Oak Street; and a new location for the Student Park, nestled close to the Crossroads dining facility in Guerry Center. To support the campus’ arboretum classification, 82 new trees will cover the area. Completion is expected this summer.
Sensing Danger
Researchers with the SimCenter: National Center for Computation Engineering are creating the future of emergency response. Their disaster mitigation system uses sensors to alert emergency responders to the location and destination of dangerous occurrences such as chemical spills or gas leaks. SimCenter Enterprises, a private affiliate bringing SimCenter technology to the marketplace, received one of only three National Science Foundation Early Concept Grants for Network Innovation to develop the system. The disaster response system takes advantage of Chattanooga’s gigabit network, the nation’s fastest, and was introduced by the White House as part of its U.S. Ignite initiative.
Pedal Around Campus
Bike Chattanooga, a public bicycle transit system new to Chattanooga, has several stations on campus. This membership-driven system allows a person to pick up a bike on campus, ride it downtown or across the Tennessee River and drop it off at another station. Bikes are rented with a fob for members or the swipe of a card. For more information, visit www.bikechattanooga.com.
