Everyone knows the importance of the heart. But how do you keep the surrounding organs and functions in sync? Kafait Malik, a professor of pharmacology at UTHSC, received a $2.8 million grant from the National Institute of Health to research how the nervous system, hormones and the immune system interact to regulate cardiovascular and kidney functions and the development of high blood pressure. Malik, with his team of postdocs scholars and students, has been studying the cardiovascular system for 37 years.
Community Care Scholarship
Pharmacy students are getting a boost from a National Association of Chain Drug Stores scholarship of $20,000. The College of Pharmacy received the award, which goes to the scholarship fund, in recognition of its community-based initiatives, number of graduates seeking pharmaceutical positions, and for work in the advancement of patient care and the preparation of students to take on professional roles.
Information Center
In the world of infinite data, it has become important to manage and translate that data. The office of Biomedical Informatics at UTHSC has been chosen as one of the 2013 Computerworld Honors Laureates for outstanding health care data service. Biomedical Informatics collects, maintains, stores and analyzes health-care data for UTHSC researchers, and the ease of the programs allows the researchers to design and administer complex databases with little to no technical training.
