The investiture of Chancellor Melinda Arnold at UT Southern brought together campus, system and community leaders to celebrate progress and possibility.

The ceremony formally recognized Arnold’s leadership at a pivotal time for the university. UT Southern joined the University of Tennessee System in 2021 and has expanded academic offerings and strengthened its role as a regional driver of workforce development and opportunity.

Investitures, among the oldest traditions in higher education, formally confer authority upon a university’s chief executive and mark a defining moment in the life of an institution. The ceremony reflects continuity and renewal, honoring the university’s foundation while affirming its future direction.

“Today isn’t the starting line,” UT President Randy Boyd says. “It’s a continuation of tremendous progress already in motion.”

Arnold, who assumed the role in July 2025, outlined a forward-looking vision centered on student success, community engagement and workforce-connected education. Her leadership reflects a focus on strengthening academic alignment, expanding access and positioning the university for sustained growth rooted in student outcomes and regional impact.

“Education is our most powerful force multiplier,” Arnold says.

UT Southern Celebrates Five Years with UT System

On July 1, UT Southern marked five years as a member of the University of Tennessee System.

Since 2021, UT Southern has expanded access to higher education across southern Middle Tennessee, strengthened workforce partnerships and increased its capacity to serve students across a 13-county region. The transition from Martin Methodist College to a UT institution further positioned the campus for growth in enrollment, academic offerings and regional impact.

That momentum is reflected in campus and statewide data. UT Southern reported enrollment of 1,132 students in fall 2025, an 8.2 percent increase from the previous year, one of the largest in the institution’s history.

Campus Continues Transformation

UT Southern’s campus is transforming, thanks to facility renovations and improvements.

UT Southern continues to invest its campus with strategic facilities enhancements to better serve students and strengthen the campus experience. Renovation work has begun in the Johnson Center, the campus’ primary academic building and library.

UT Southern also is preparing to physically link Andrews Hall and Martin Hall. This project will improve accessibility and streamline movement across campus. Enhancing the connectivity between key academic and administrative buildings will support operational efficiency.
