As Mike Griffin (Chattanooga ’85) prepares to take on the role of president of the UT Alumni Association on July 1, he reflects on a life of community service and deep connections. Griffin’s journey is marked by a strong sense of community, a passion for giving back and a lifelong commitment to the University of Tennessee System.
Griffin and his wife Kim (Chattanooga ’83) moved from Signal Mountain in Chattanooga to their current Cleveland, Tennessee, home in 2012, but the transition didn’t sever his ties to the tight-knit community they left behind. Despite the move, he maintains a beloved tradition where he makes the drive back to Signal Mountain every Saturday morning to play tennis with old friends and visit his mother, a routine that underscores his commitment to maintaining personal connections and honoring family ties.
Griffin’s dedication extends beyond personal relationships to his extensive community involvement. His introduction to the UTC Alumni Board came through a serendipitous encounter with Kim White (Chattanooga ’82), a fellow alumna and current vice chancellor of advancement at UT Chattanooga who recognized his potential for leadership.
“Kim asked if I’d be interested in serving on the board, and it was an immediate yes,” Griffin recounts. This invitation marked the beginning of a deep engagement with the alumni community, and would eventually lead to his role as president of the UT Alumni Association Board of Governors.
Griffin, who is president of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, doesn’t limit his leadership to the alumni community. His presidency of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga Hamilton Place and Rotary Club of Cleveland as well as involvement in multiple boards, including the Erlanger Hospital Board of Trustees, demonstrate his broad commitment to service.
As he steps into the presidency of the UT Alumni Association, Griffin is driven by a desire to continue the legacy of those who came before him.
“I’ve had great mentors like Tom Losh (Chattanooga ’71, ’74) and Debbie Ingram (Chattanooga ’84, Knoxville ’94), and I want to carry on their work,” he explains. His vision for his term is rooted in continuity and enhancement of existing programs.
“I don’t have a specific agenda, but I want to support the UT System, foster connections and encourage alumni to give back.”
Griffin was most recently the chair of the Cleveland State Community College Board of Trustees. Through his role, he had the opportunity to address graduates during their commencement ceremony. His address encapsulated his philosophy of openness, presence and generosity. He advised graduates to be open to opportunities, diligent in their efforts and generous with their time, talent and resources.
“People ask why I do so much, and the answer is simple: I love it,” he says. “Helping others, giving back and building connections bring immense joy and fulfillment.”
For Griffin, the UT System is more than an educational institution—it’s a family that supports its members throughout their lives.
“The support for students and alumni is incredible,” he says, praising the career placement efforts and the leadership throughout the system. “It’s a great group of people, and I’m honored to be part of it.”
To fellow alumni, Griffin’s message is clear: “Look for opportunities to get involved. Whether it’s through financial support or volunteering your time, you’ll find that what you give comes back to you many times over.”
His own life, rich with connections and experiences, stands as a testament to the rewards of service and community engagement.
“Every yes has opened doors and created lasting friendships,” he concludes. “And that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
Griffin and his wife have two children, Julia (Knoxville ’07) and Graham.
