The Tennessee Alumnus took top honors at the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District III awards in Atlanta in February. The magazine won the Grand Award for magazine/tabloid improvement and another award for overall excellence in the magazine category, besting other large and prestigious universities.
“I’m grateful to the excellent writers and communication professionals across the UT system who bring great ideas and great work to the magazine and its system-wide perspective,” Tennessee Alumnus managing editor Jennifer Sicking says. “We really appreciate our readers, too. Their feedback on each issue helps us improve continually.”
UT Tackles Opioid Crisis
In his third State of the University address on Feb. 28, UT President Joe DiPietro announced the university’s plan to tackle the opioid crisis in Tennessee.
“It’s exactly the kind of challenge that land-grant, research universities are made to take on,” DiPietro says. “And it’s a problem of such complexity and consequence, it will require all we can do to overcome it.”
DiPietro highlighted successes of the past year in each of the university’s three mission pillars—education, research and outreach. UT is strong, DiPietro says, which means Tennessee is strong.
“The stronger the state of this university, the stronger the state of Tennessee,” DiPietro says. “Because everywhere you look, UT.”

Survey Says: Students are Satisfied
More than 80 percent of UT students reported being comfortable or very comfortable with their campus climate in a system-wide student experience survey. More than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students—for an overall response rate of 24 percent—provided feedback on topics ranging from overall satisfaction with the university to whether a student had experienced intimidating conduct to free speech and sexual harassment.
The survey was available to all UT students in spring 2017 and, following a thorough analysis of responses, findings were reported in February 2018. The survey’s purpose was to assess student experiences, perceptions and needs toward identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement.
