That’s the total economic contribution of the UT Health Science Center to the state. Spending by the university, clinical practice operations, students and visitors totaled $970 million for FY2010, according to a study by the Methodist Le Bonheur Center for Healthcare Economics and the Sparks Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Memphis. Using economic multipliers, the total contribution of UTHSC to the state’s economy was a little more than $2.3 billion. In the same year, UTHSC received $126.6 million in appropriations from the state, meaning the state’s return on investment was more than 18 to 1. Read the entire study (pdf).
