The Naifeh Center for Effective Leadership continues its long-standing partnership with the Tennessee Department of Human Resources with its newest program, the Tennessee Government Professionals Institute (TGPI). This institute is for high-performing employees who may not be at the managerial or executive level but want to build upon their professional skills. Sixty state employees participated in the inaugural cohort of TGPI this spring.
City, County Mayors Discuss Challenges
The Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) and County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) partnered with the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury to create the Successful Connections training. This training is for city and county mayors and directors of utility districts in Tennessee. Training topics for the quarterly sessions are selected by the attendees to address current issues they face in their organizations. A recent session topic was hiring and retaining workers.
TLC Offers Language Training to Afghan Refugees
The Tennessee Language Center (TLC) and Catholic Charities Diocese of Nashville joined forces to welcome and acclimate 332 Afghan refugees to Middle Tennessee.
TLC has tested 289 of these refugees to ascertain their English proficiency and either placed them in a TLC English as a Second Language (ESL) class at the appropriate level or referred them to other agencies for assistance. TLC will be testing and referring all the adult refugees in the Nashville area. So far, 108 Afghans have attended a TLC ESL class, with more expected to enroll during the coming months.
