- The UT Knoxville Haslam College of Business received a $3 million gift from the Boyd Foundation to create professorships and expand the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research Endowment.
- The College of Nursing received a $5.5 million grant from the Tennessee Department of Health to help increase immunization rates for children and older adults in the state.
- Dwight Hutchins (Knoxville ’86) pledged more than $10 million to the Fred D. Brown Minority Engineering Scholarship, which supports students from historically underrepresented populations.
- The UT Knoxville Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations is the first named school of advertising and public relations among all land-grant institutions in the country and the first of its kind in the Southeastern Conference. Its goal is to modernize and expand advertising and public relations education.
Faculty Honors
Jack Dongarra, distinguished professor of computer science in the UT Knoxville Tickle College of Engineering, was named recipient of the 2021 Turing Award, often called the Nobel Prize of computing. His pioneering contributions helped pave the way for high-performance computing’s evolution during the past 40 years.
Assistant Professor in Chemistry Mahshid Ahmadi was named a Sloan Research Fellow for her revolutionary work with materials known as perovskites, which are grown from chemical solutions in order to develop low-cost materials that can be easily manufactured for use in electronics.
Assistant Professor of Sociology Deadric Williams, a family sociologist, was named one of five new members of William T. Grant Scholars and received $350,000 to execute a rigorous five-year plan to expand his research.
Research
- UT Knoxville has launched the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, bringing together more than 160 faculty experts from across colleges to work with industry partners on technology that solves real-world problems.
- UT Knoxville opened its first out-of-state research office in Huntsville, Alabama. The UT Space Institute Huntsville Research Center will connect federal agencies and industry leaders with UTK talent and capabilities to solve complex aerospace and defense challenges.
