Students attended the annual 4-H Congress at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, where they focused on speaking competitions and mock Congress. While attending the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association conference in College Station, Texas, the UT Institute of Agriculture advancement team met with Jim Heird, center, a 1971 UT College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus and current Texas A&M executive professor and coordinator of the Equine Initiative. Tom Gill, center, who recently joined the UT Institute of Agriculture as the Donald and Terry Smith Endowed Chair for International Sustainable Agriculture and director of International Programs, receives a Big Orange welcome from UTIA and UT Foundation staff. Thanks to the generosity of Cornelia Holland of Franklin, Tennessee, the UT Gardens in Knoxville has added a hosta garden featuring more than 500 hosta varieties. Holland, who has been collecting hosta plants since 1995, allowed UT Gardens personnel to collect divisions from her extensive personal garden of both species and hybrid plants. Tranquility is open to the public and was formally dedicated June 7. The 2015 UT Gardens Gala raised $96,590 through event tickets, auction sales and sponsorships, which resulted in $65,082 returning to the gardens to support more hands-on student internships, enhance garden planting material and broaden teaching and outreach programs. UT Martin alum Richard W. James teaches a class in the Fine Arts ceramics studio during the spring semester. James received his BFA from UTM in 2001 and is currently an MFA candidate in ceramics at the University of Kansas. While visiting UT Martin, James produced sculptures and led students in hands-on work. John Barker, a Humboldt, Tennessee, native, spoke during UT Martin’s spring commencement in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Barker is the chief accountability officer for Chicago Public Schools and is a 1989 UT Martin graduate.
