Nothing could be more refreshing in the summer than going down a water slide or floating along a lazy river. But students, faculty and staff at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga don’t have to wait for summer. This two-story water slide and 250-foot-long lazy river are part of the Aquatic Recreation Center or ARC on campus across from McKenzie Arena.
The $23 million ARC was built in two phases and funded solely from student fees. The first phase included 100,000 square feet of space to work out, lift weights, take exercise classes, climb a wall or play basketball, volleyball or badminton. The second phase, completed in August 2011, included the swimming pool area. The lazy river is powered by a set of pumps that creates a current of about 2 miles an hour. There’s also a kayak plunge pool that simulates whitewater.
