The Power of Taking a Chance

Students enter an arena in preparation for their college graduation ceremony.

As we celebrated 9,652 new graduates this May, we were reminded that every bold step begins with a choice. Each diploma represents a student who made an intentional decision to pursue a better future. Their success reflects the power of taking thoughtful chances—supported by a university committed to their growth.

Meaningful change doesn’t happen by accident. It begins when someone decides to explore a new idea, pursue a different path or build a better future. Across the University of Tennessee System, we see those decisions every day. A student chooses to attend college— sometimes as the first in their family—setting a new course for generations. A faculty member launches a program that expands access to education in underserved communities. A researcher pursues a new approach to improve health outcomes. These are not spontaneous leaps—they are strategic choices rooted in mission, service and vision.

From pioneering agricultural innovations to advancing rural health care and preparing the next generation of leaders, UT is working in all 95 counties. We are educating students, solving complex problems and creating opportunities that strengthen Tennessee and beyond.

Progress comes from action—carefully considered, forward facing and driven by purpose. When we take the right chances for the right reasons, we don’t just imagine what’s next—we make it real.

And, in doing so, we are continuing to build the greatest decade in the University of Tennessee’s history.
