Four issues in 2014. All different. All fun to make. What was the best?
The most read stories of 2014 were the cover stories, which makes sense and confirms why they were on the cover. I liked them all, but based on the number of clicks, our readers chose Southern Gentlemen about the Knoxville-based band The Dirty Guv’nahs. That was followed by How to See (all of) UT, the feature about our road trip across the state; Inside the Octagon about MMA fighter Ovince Saint Preux; and Eyes on LaFollette, a retrospective of a student photojournalism project over the last 20 years.
My favorite non-cover stories were Discover, Invent, Change, about 12 inventions by UT faculty; Disappearing Appalachia and Life in the Delta, both by Fred Brown; Twenty Years to Life, which was a great experience to report and write; and Listen to Joe because UT’s president, who has a genuinely down-to-earth demeanor, is taking on a huge issue that may not have an easy answer.
Magazines aren’t all about words, though. So I do have some favorite photos. Those are sprinkled in this article.
And, we can’t leave out video. Easily, my favorite is Knockout, which uses a Go Pro to show what it’s like to fight Ovince Saint Preux. This wasn’t for the Alumnus, but clearly the most viewed video produced by our office was UT President Joe DiPietro dancing to “Happy.” And who doesn’t like that hat?
